I'm still very much a noob re: java and PDF manipulation, so I'll ask my 
co-workers about your questions and reply as soon as I find out.

 

Our Java programmer put together a unit test that I've shared here:

I wasn't sure how to find the exact size of the fonts from the original PDF, 
but when I brought our unit test down to size 8, the distortion becomes obvious 
(picture below).
