Tres Finocchiaro commented on PDFBOX-4709:
------------------------------------------

[~tilman] I see you've added the Zebra tag (and it makes sense) but if you'd
like we also have hardware to reproduce with other thermal printers.  Zebra
happens to have:
 # A usable emulator
-- and --
 # Uses a fix-document size.

What's particularly interesting about these thermal printers is they often
expose quality issues that we have a hard time spotting with the 600/1200 dpi
Inkjet/LaserJet printers.

We have access to:
 * BOCA Ticket printers (200 dpi, thermal, fixed size)
 * Epson Receipt printers (180 dpi, thermal, variable length)
 * Epson-compat Receipt printers (same as above)

The reason we filed this bug with Zebra unit-tests is because services like
FedEx, USPS, UPS, Amazon, DHL all offer labels in various formats.  4x6
shipping labels are so widely used that many of them offer documents in PDF
format as a compatibility fallback.  Fortunately, the shipping labels are so
large, the artifacts aren't obvious to the naked eye.  It's only when people
start using it for smaller labels when the problem arises.  For example, some
clients use thermal printers for inventory and barcoding, which would greatly
suffer from this bug.

> When printing a PDF from PDFBox to a Zebra GK420d thermal label printer, the
> text from the PDF is blurry and appears to have the top and bottom cut off
> compared to printing the same file through Adobe Acrobat.
