I'm overall *much* in favor of change here, as the build system is one of the first contact points for new devs, and it *is* arcane, non-standard, and largely inefficient (I have a good recollection of Kai's jam measurements...).
Whether cmake is the best possible choice I don't know, though (but then again, if someone volunteers to work on that, I'd definitely not discourage him).
