Hi David,
Well, theres still the image of the worldmap inside that button, so even
when you don't know what "native language" means, you could guess from
the image.
If I'm a first-time user, I don't want to have to "guess" or go on a hunt
through several levels of clicks to find what I need. I've said it
before: the main page at www.openoffice.org is not designed to meet the
needs of the first-time user who is trying to find out about the product.
You are now no longer talking about the native language section, since
besides changing 'native language' in 'choose your language' i don't see
much changed about that. Since 'choose your language' is incorrect for
reasons pointed out by Christian, I don't think that is a change for the
better.
If you mean that http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html itself
needs a redesign, then I can tell you that the project pages are already
worked on. If you have ideas on how to improve the page to make it more
obvious for the visitor, then poste your ideas to [email protected]
My specific objections and ideas have been posted here:
http://website.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=7274
and here:
http://website.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=dev&msgNo=7486
And a mockup of a revision is still at these URLs, which both go to the
same page:

Why this emphasis on explaining what is, at least I believe, a pretty
well known concept: 'Office suite' or 'Office package' or 'Office
tools'... it consists of an application that you can write with, you can
make calculations with, do presentations with and possibly keep your
stuff organized with. 'Math' and 'Draw' are two nice extras but the most
popular office suite today, 'MS Office', also has these features...
though not as separate programs, if I remember correctly. If the concept
is not well known, people can click on the underlined word 'office
suite' in the description [1]... so what is missing? You didn't respond
to my response to your comments at that time.
I think your mockup adds lots of text that is also distracting to new
users... and how does explaining the concept of an Office suite at the
front page help end users? Please
I can sympathize with those who find the international projects a little
bit too inaccessible... and believe discussing that is worthwhile...
though I'm also not sure whether it needs much changes to the frontpage
(though I'm also for 'smart' assisting javascript use)... as Christian
said, the native language confederation page [2] may also be made a
whole lot friendlier...

which indeed may be written more friendly ...
