How about using Tango icons and Nik's icons (i.e. the swiss army knife for extensions) to add a little graphical complexity? They could be washed out / near-greyscale, and on mouseover they could be full-color. The ones at http://www.murb.nl/extern/openoffice.org/iconsactionstatement/ are not distinct enough IMO, as they all have a block/square like shape. I'll post how I think it could look like tomorrow.
