Yep... and the issue is 4 years old and ends with the recommendation of "Send Feedback". I have no idea why Google doesn't add text mode to it's gmail phone apps... seems like it would be a simple thing for them to do - but then again, look at their other apps - especially their messaging strategy (or apparent lack thereof). It's the wild west over there.
