I disagree, and would make so bold as to suggest that this statement indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of the problem. The problem is inherent in the way e-smith/SME performs the gateway (or routing) function, which has been the same since at least the days of version 3.0 (and probably earlier, but 3.0 is when I started using it). With version 3.0, e-smith did not include the ip_masq_icq module (I remember having to compile it myself), and without that module, some ICQ functions didn't work (in particular, direct file transfer and direct chat; others may have been affected as well). Once installed, that module would perform the appropriate translation on the packets to allow these functions. Unfortunately, not being intimately familiar with either the ICQ protocol or kernel programming, I can't describe the situation in more detail. However, I think this adequately demonstrates that the problem is inherent in the "gateway" function, not in the "security" function (which was considerably less involved at version 3.0). Now, you seem to be saying that there are other distros which use masqing with a 2.4 kernel, and have full support for all the functions of ICQ, h.323, realaudio, etc. At least two of us have asked for details on these, but you have not responded. I ask you again: which ones? If this is not what you are claiming, would you please clarify? - -- Dan Brown, KE6MKS, [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Since all the world is but a story, it were well for thee to buy the more enduring story rather than the story that is less enduring." -- The Judgment of St. Colum Cille -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP 7.0.4 iQA/AwUBPGRtKX6CI7gsQbX8EQJ/vACfXldiburO6ednT/I5D5Km/d2vryUAn0XL du9BGvMT4EtcCCXvq+C6AsiK =dVQR -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- Please report bugs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] (only) to discuss security issues Support for registered customers and partners to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives by mail and http://www.mail-archive.com/devinfo%40lists.e-smith.org
