First, let us explain ourselves.
1) We don't use SME but ESGS 4.1.2 Our contrib is version independent (we
think, we haven't tried with SME). The blades are not present in ESGS
2) We waited, and waited for Mitel to release that information. We didn't
want to make this public because, as you say, it might "compete" with the
blade concept. But they seem like Duracell Batteries, they kept waiting and
waiting (I really don't understand this point, the main point I saw in SME
and they don't explote it :'( Yes I know, they have other duties but I
couldn't wait longer.
3) This is a poor's man approach to Mitel's blade. You don't need all the
infraestructure needed for blades, actually you are completelly independant
of Mitel's infraestructure, and in our case that was important (you know, we
have a very customized ESGS server). Even an official release from Mitel
needs some work before using it.
4) Two recent announcements in this list made us jump. One was Darrel idea
of a development iso and his new web page, the other Placido asking more or
less how to upload files into the server. As this was going to happen anyway
we just jumped in. We just asked Darrel to follow some kind of standarization
to make both projects work toguether. Placido's got his project allready done
:)))
5) They are EXTREMELLY easy to make. At least for now, you just need to go
into Darrel's webpage, grab the needed files and execute one (DOCUMENTED)
command. Most of the contribs would work right away. I spent 1 hour to write
my little announcement / howto, so simple it is. I understand the blade
concept goes much farther, but actually what inspired us was smoothwall's
update process.
6) We don't know if the blades "code" is closed source. With SME you have to
be carefull as some parts are closed and propietary source. As we needed to
detach from Mitel's "blades server" we made this. If you studyt it, is so
simple that only lets you install things.
7) It will be greatelly extended as Darrel and others have decided to
contribute some of their valuable time to this project. They see the
potential for it, they need it as much as we do and surely you do.

The question is, why Mitel didn't release it allready? Yes, Darrel came
with a first steps howo, but why the "official" guys have no done it yet.
This has gone for too long. I believe is just strane from their part,
releasing this info soon after SME release would have made inmediatelly
available a lot of contribs.
Regards.
