Probably the same reason why a tarball + scripts was renamed to RPM... Blades contain tighter control over which versions work with which version of Mitel SME, and they are also double checked to work within the "e-smith contrib" guidlines. This basically means better quality control for those not willing to 'fix up' RPM dependancies and problems.
After saying that, it's still only a set of goals.
