It allows you to maintain a Freenet website without having a gateway
page. You can have a single URI which points directly to an already
date-base-redirected page.

Additionally, it doesn't take away anything. In the case where you want to
have a date-based redirect without inserting a redirect document, you now
have that ability.

Also, it simplifies the control document spec significantly because you no
longer need two separate messages, one for redirects and one for
date-based redirects.
