AFAIK, both projects provide the whole patched software, and are
essentially forks for the original projects. I think they are bound to
die soon. Xine have already integrated XvMC decoding with libraries for
nVidia and Unichrome, both with X dependencies. I think MPlayer also has
integrated XvMC since then.

I don't think so, but I didn't follow their latest developement...
