One big downside to the email approach is that it's asynchronous.  I
think that if someone comes to register a domain they'd much prefer to
be told "yes, you've got that domain" rather than "maybe you've got
that domain - we'll get back to you".

If you're offering .co.uk domains you've already got some
asynchronicity to deal with, however I think that synchronous systems
should be used wherever possible.
