I haven't seen anything from Tucows say this, but since I have some
intimate knowledge into the inner workings of registries, I know that
this is something Tucows can't do.

They only thing they can do is the same thing you can do, talk to
ICANN/Verisign.

FWIW, I don't think the renewal semantics will change.
