>They are bounded with MEANING to make things easier to locate.< This about all we agree on and it solidifies my point (but only to myself ;)
As a registrant I want to choose how I classify my domain because at the end of the day if I choose a lame domain name then that's my fault. But if a registry or ICANN tells me what TLD I have to use and I don't feel that it best represents my interests then I think that's their fault. Should a net user dictate how I choose to classify my net endeavor? I don't think so but you seem to. I think of a directory structure on my computer..I've given up trying to create dir's that match what docs and code I put in there because I never get it right and frankly the amount of junk that's in there is mind-boggling (much like the internet) so what do I do? [jwoods@gandalf jwoods]$locate whatever And voila I find what I need. Now your point about switching it all over the .schmizzle is silly because, I nor any sane person would ever choose that type of TLD. But you strike me as the type of person who is highly organized that way and has the right folder and all the right files in it ;) Another thing to think about is that chartered TLD's require policing...which increases the cost to the registry (ask RCOM regarding .pro!!) What the heck is a pro anyway?! Its meant to be professional right? Will the average net user know this?! I doubt it because we are getting into semantics here but I'd be willing to bet they think of pro as expert and not lawyers, Doctors etc. Eye of the Beholder? Good debating with you! Registrants are best served not by giving them what they WANT -- any old domain they choose -- but what they NEED -- domains under which they can be found. I disagree totally with the registrant-centric view of the net. >My 85 year old grandmother who is a fantastic web user has no clue >regarding difference between TLD's...Heck she shouldn't...but she sure >does know how to google!! ;) > > Then why don't we just change them all to .shmizzle, .dsfsdf, .54gfg, etc.?
