There are certainly a bunch of different skills in both roles.  
There's also a heck of an overlap in other places.

They'll always be experts, but I far prefer to work with a group of  
people who have enough knowledge outside of their area of expertise  
to work effectively with others. Whether that be a developer with IxD  
skills, or an IxDer with developer skills.

Let's say the "right number of people". I often find too many just as  
damaging as too few.
