Hello LOPSA,

We have a set of systems which are accessing a back-end storage system
via NFS. We've been having some performance issues, so I've been
investigating iSCSI.

I've set up a FreeNAS server for testing. FreeNAS is BSD based, and
runs both NFS and iSCSI.

On the FreeNAS server I set up a ZFS filesystem. I then exported the
filesystem via NFS, and also set up an iSCSI volume on it.

This system and the test client are both on a gigabit network, with
two switches between them.

I mounted the NFS volume on the client system (Ubuntu 9.10 system),
and also mounted the iSCSI volume on the same system.

I then did a simple test, copying a 4.3 gig ISO to each volume. I did
this two times, and timed the second copy; this way the overhead of
allocating space was eliminated.

The results puzzled me:

    NFS: 5:08
    iSCSI: 5:54

I was expecting the iSCSI to be faster, but this seems to indicate
that it is slower.

What am I missing?

Thanks

JBB
