I'd rather work on "visibility" than "politics". I /don't/ know what politics is, and that means we'll just repeat our favorite debates that reflect our progressive/conservative/libertarian/malthusian/pastafarian/whatever beliefs.
I find that in the real world all that debating is entertaining but fruitless. When an issue comes up it is pretty cut-and-dried how we'll respond. "Responding" means the issues has been pretty much been boiled down to its essential details by the time a new kid on the block like LOPSA is asked for a quote. If we get to the point that we are setting the agenda, then those progressive/conservative/libertarian/malthusian/pastafarian/whatever debates will be appropriate. We're not there yet. I /do/ know what visibility looks like. It looks like X New York Times articles each month that get a quote from someone that identifies as a LOPSA member. It means at least Y reporters at different papers that feel confident that if they call on LOPSA for a quote, they'll get it before 3pm so they can make their 4pm writing deadline. I can get behind: X = 4 Y = 3 I would donate $Z for every time NYT prints a quote from someone identifying as a LOPSA member for the first year. I bet we have enough Z's to fund a PR agency helping us get started.
