I did that exact same thing. I was working in a webroot at the time, though. I managed to stop the chown -R somewhere in /dev, and was able to restore all of the other files based upon the server's twin. Of course, this was on a production system. To add to that, my boss was observing at the time. Being the kind soul he was, he let me fix it myself as he chuckled his way back to his cubicle. -- John H.
