moin moin,
However, I ended up *not* booking as part of the block since I am going
to be paying this out of pocket and I don't want to add another $30+
onto that rate for internet access and breakfast. The hotel has a rate
just $25 above the conference rate that includes both of those. I really
wish SCALE had been able to negotiate a rate that at least gave an
option of internet access since I will most likely have to do some work
from my room while I'm there and consider the hotel's price for wifi to
be rather high if I have to purchase it every day.
I believe the cabled Internet connection is free with the room. I was
definitely able to use it last year without prior arrangements. I think
wireless was also generally available last year, but the hotel's dhcp
server was overwhelmed the only times I tried it. Others were getting on
without problems at other times. A friend says there was a confirmed
reboot by the hotel and everything suddenly worked.
I agree that technical conferences ( especially those with a strong sysadm
showing ) should make sure Internet connections are included for everyone
in the room block. The issue is that we provide much more load than the
hotel is used to, so they have technical issues.
It'd be awesome ( but difficult to pull off ) if the conference has pulled
in bandwidth just for the conference and could split off the room block to
use that seperate network. For that I'd be glad to pay a few extra
dollars, especially for a conference as inexpensive as SCaLE.
I don't know about the hotel breakfast as I didn't try to do that.
ciao,
der.hans
