Off-hours maintenance going with on-call was similarly problematic with one coworker at my last job; he would schedule the maintenance with the customer for what was then yet his on-call week but keep it quiet from the rest of the department until someone had accepted the swap. It was the reason that he was the only coworker in the department with whom I refused to swap on-call weeks.
