Adapt or Die. While I whole-heatedly disagree with the "50 monkeys" approach many IT organizations *are* the equivalent of "50 monkeys" But the entire IT industry is still in upheaval and as we profesionalize COs will eventually recognize that, like accounting and HR, having a professional IT department in-house is necessary for a successful business. (The whole "cloud" thing muddies the picture by confusing IT with outsourcing, but we will adapt .. or die.)
I weep for the companies with COs that don't recognize the need for good IT/security/data-management in their organization. Maybe they will survive, but I doubt they will be as successful as companies that /can/ manage their data and compute service effectively. Yes, it is difficult to find and hire a good IT department but it is well worth the effort. As for the half-life of a SysAdmin, the role of a SA is usually a stepping stone along the career path, just like in any other industry. Most people should grow and change, moving from one job to another and one role to another. I would be concerned if any of my directs were satisfied being a SysAdmin for their entire career.
