I do a "fair" amount.  When I started my business (pretty much as a SA for
hire, to some extent) I had some time and it made sense.  I'm still helping
these organizations going forward, but like the others it get's hard in the
long term... I now have a very young daughter and a large workload from
other clients.

I still do what I can, and I think it's important especially to a business
owner/consultant to do some of this giving back to the community.  If you
are a W-2 employee somewhere I think it's a bit tougher, but there are
great benefits and insight in getting away a few hours a month to see how
non-profit it works -- could be a eye opener for many.  Worth asking your
boss at the next annual review if this can be part of your development plan.

If I had to guess, I'd say I do about 5% pro bono work versus billable
hours. That's not a ton, but it's sustainable.
