I do a "fair" amount. When I started my business (pretty much as a
SA for hire, to some extent) I had some time and it made sense. I'm
still helping these organizations going forward, but like the others
it get's hard in the long term... I now have a very young daughter
and
a large workload from other clients.
I have reached one of those phases of life as well. Mine is for medical
expenses which are excluded from insurance coverage. Over the next few
years, the total cost of will approximately equal my gross annual
salary, meaning I'm rather motivated to volunteer for more on-call
shifts, which are compensated fairly well at my current employer.
Worth asking your boss at the next annual review if
this can be part of your development plan.
My previous employer had a small number of leave hours per employee
each year for volunteering for a charitable organization (there were
also some specific to the volunteering being at an educational
institution.) I thought it was a great idea that only failed due to a
site-specific execution problem - management of my division very much
discouraged the use of such time.
