6 years ago my then employer (financial sector, non-US) issued laptops from a 
pool, that weren't to have sensitive data stored on them, and which were 
reinstalled on return. (Presentation slides etc probably ok, as long as you 
weren't carrying around anything sensitive)

The policy was that you accessed the (SSL) VPN with ACE token to get a Citrix 
desktop from which you could read email, access corporate documents, etc.

But I'm sure the "I need all my sensitive data on the plane" crowd have won out 
since then. 

I know the issue has been coming back into the frame, with respect to travel to 
other more totalitarian countries, though.
