when I saw the question I was thinking more as in:

Sets off alarms to your security peple, keystroke logs everything you do, and possibly even prevents some of the worst types of data destruction. Bonus points for the design if it drops people into a honeypot.

Yes, for some people for some things, having a 'wipe everything, let them beat me up now for tricking them' is desirable.

But with alarm systems, the duress input doesn't do anything along those lines, instead it shuts off the alarm so that the attackers think everything is just fine, but in the meantime it tells the alarm monitoring that something is _very_ wrong and they generally call the cops immediately.

Do you mean like in plausible deniability aspect like TrueCrypt's? Or the

If anyone's serious about searching your hardware, are they really going to
let you enter a password? I guess this is more useful in avoiding casual
harassment at the border. Which US citizens are apparently now free from,
but the rest of us must endure :)

 Lawrence,
I think it was appropriate for the list. Albeit maybe ,missing some
things or long winded but you as a Moderator can't get into editing a

I agree that it was appropriate, which has caused me to think of another
issue: When are commercial security systems going to accept a "duress"
password. We are getting to the point that we really need this capability.

It's not what I know that counts.
It's what I can remember in time to use.
