So, this bubble-wrap of which you speak, is it pink (dissipates
static)? Mechanical protection isn't the only issue. If the
vendor repackages bulk-packed hard drives, ESD (electro-static
discharge) precautions would be key because the drive head
assemblies are among the most ESD-sensitive components
encountered in a server. This could show up as outright DOA
units, but could also degrade the signal-to-noise ratio
coming off the heads with associated un-correctable errors.
