Personally, I make a distinction between 'manufacturer refurbished' drives (e.g. what I get back when I RMA a drive to WD or Seagate) and what a random vendor calls "refurbished" - the stuff that random vendors call "refurbished" is almost always pretty goddamn sketchy (and nearly always doesn't come with a manufacturers warranty)

As far as I can tell, the stuff I get back from a WD or Seagate RMA? as good as new drives. (and often better than, because WD and Seagate are far better about handling and shipping drives than any 3rd party vendor.)

But yeah, I generally avoid the "refurbished" stuff that doesn't come direct from the manufacturer; it's usually crap, and even if it's cheap enough to make it worth the higher failure rate, it's usually not worth it, as dealing with the failures has a cost, too.
