It depends how much stuff you want to carry around :)

I used a Swissgear Wenger "straight" backpack for some years,
I'm pretty sure it was an Ibex -
http://www.wengerna.com/ibex-computer-backpack-12358
and I couldn't fault it.

Then I messed up my ankle last October and carrying weight
was a problem... and then I had to do some travelling, so I
needed some wheels at short notice. I picked up a Targus
TSB75001US ( http://tinyurl.com/lafxqtn ) from Staples and
burned some 'points' of some description for less than MSRP.
For day to day use it's been just fine and rolls around very
nicely; works for a 15" laptop has a few pockets.

Not a place I would have thought of looking for a backpack,
but I was in IKEA the other day and saw their offerings.
This one - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50236454/
is a rollerbag/backpack with a detachable "mini" backpack
that looks like it would do really well as a carryon bag;
very reminiscent of an Eagle Creek backpack (without wheels)
I had for some years that did trojan service until the lining
spontaneously started to degrade into a sticky texture.
IKEA had some other offerings, they look to be pretty sturdy
at reasonable prices. Worth checking out if you have a store
nearby, I think.

FWIW
