Getting in the small size, I'm really happy with the small Eddie Bauer
trailhead:

It is small... Just enough space for a small laptop and a book or lunch + a front pocket for pens, glasses etc... Perfect if that's all you carry.

One major drawback: There is no cushioning at the bottom, which means you can damage your laptop when setting your bag down. I have sent them a suggestion, but nothing came out of it.

Depending on which laptop(s) I'm using, I have a couple of Timbuk2 bags that
work well. From what I believe was a "medium" I found like-new for $8 at
Goodwill, to an XL that I got as a welcome gift two or three jobs ago, they're
good stuff. I also have a thrift-store assortment of other bags, much to my
companion's dismay (but hey, it's my closet).

One of my cooler finds, especially for the months I have to travel, was a
Targus Checkpoint-Friendly Mobile Elite.

This one may have been $12 at Goodwill, new with tags.

I probably would not throw my usual laptop, convertible T100, two tablets,
ipod touch, and TSA-unfriendly tangle of cords across the room or under a
truck in one of these, but you probably wouldn't be surprised how infrequently
I have to worry about that situation.

Nobody has yet mentioned LL Bean?

Compared to others mentioned here, LL Bean is inexpensive. They
    have a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty.

The Quad now comes with a padded laptop sleeve. There are enough
compartments, and sufficient separation between them, that I
don't have a problem carrying a laptop, clothing, and lunch.

External water bottle mesh pockets -- also great for
    small umbrellas.

Cinch straps, so it doesn't flap around when you're not fully
loaded. A hip strap and chest strap, so if you're carrying
heavy, it still feels good an hour later. A rugged single-hand
    carry strap up top.

And, of course, available in several colors including "I'm an
engineer black" and "That one's mine! red". Monogrammable.
