Mak, sounds like a great idea. There shouldn't be a reason not to do it, esp. if it's voluntary sign-up. If someone doesn't like it, they simply don't subscribe.
Siu/Ron: Agree that if people are being always told "don't discuss this on a public list" that we should have a members-only list that members are subscribed to. It will take a lot of traffic off of discuss@, if people would prefer to discuss it on the members-only lists (it would be up to the poster which list she/he posts to).
