That's very reasonable. I listed this as a "nice to have" rather than
as a "must have" for the sorts of reasons you give.

However, I do find several real advantages for having the instruments.
I often find myself listening to a piece and hearing a great trumpet
solo, for example, and I think "Who did that solo? I'd like to hear
more of his solos." I then look in the track comments and see who the
trumpet player was. Since it is often someone I've never heard of
before, just having a list of sidemen doesn't tell me who it is. This
is a very common scenario, especially since I have many compilation
CDs, like the awesome Jazz Masters series. This works OK just in the
comment, and not in the metadata, but the SW engineer in me says it
would be nice to capture in the metadata. It also occurs to me that the
Soloist tag might be relevant, in case there are multiple trumpet
players.

Another reason is that jazz players are often multi-instrumentalist,
especially related instruments. Personally, I often prefer to listen to
Allan Holdsworth play the guitar, rather than his ubiquitous Synthaxe.
Likewise, it is not uncommon to be in the mood to listen to Oscar
Peterson play the piano rather than the Fender Rhodes.

Again, none of these are showstoppers, but a nice way to handle it
would be genuinely appreciated by your users (at least this one).

Nothing fancy, I just set up my Jazz library so it can be browsed by
either artist or performer (if you want something more complicated, ask
how I set up classical :) )

I realize that I go a little overboard entering all the metadata, but I
like to think I'm not the only fanatic ;)

Thanks for looking into this. This is all awesome.
