First of all, group is a rare thing in jazz world, at least in my experience. There are some orchestras which one might be interested in searching for, and a few small groups, but much more often I search for a musician. Yes, a musician can be a member of several groups, but again, quite seldom does one deal with this. Usually when I tag a group with a group name (using band tag), I either list individual musicians in comments, or use one or several lead artist in the artist field. If I listen for a track, I am usually interested in this specific album. In some cases I can imagine I might be interested in other tracks by the same artist(s) or band. > > How do you use instrument when searching for something ? > Is it mainly the lead instrument that is of interest or all instruments > used on a track ? > > Are there many jazz musicians that play multiple instrument so you like > to find a specific artist but only his saxophone tracks ? I usually associate an album with an instrument when this is a small group, with one or several lead musicians. Depending on what these musicians play, I put an instrument into my genre. For example: when having a piano trio, I use "piano" as an instrument. Or, if i have a record of a small combo with a sax player, I use "saxophone" as an instrument. On the other hand, in many cases I do not associate a disc with an instrument - for example, sometimes a disc is not a case of a distinct soloist. On example is Art Blakey; he lead a group and he was a drummer, but never I tag his albums with drums. So, usually you are interested in an instrument of a lead artist. You might have several lead artists, and then you will have several instruments you might make a search for. If you adopt the idea of "lead artist" with their appropriate instruments, and "side artists" with theirs, this will be universal enough. This way, one could: 1. Look for all albums/tracks by a certain musician as a lead/side artist 2. Look for all albums/tracks with a certain lead instrument 3. and maybe some more Multiple instruments can indeed be present. A purist approach would require to have multiple instrument fields for each artist for each track. I'm not sure you are prepared to go this route, but it will be universal for sure. I, for one thing, would not use multiple lead instruments; for lead instrument I would choose one for each lead artist. Also, probably I would do the same for my side artists. But maybe I will store additional info in comments. I'm glad I can be of any help, and my admiration is due for all incredible efforts you put into this. -- ymilner ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ymilner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1370 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81898 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
