New participant, and I am a relatively big Jazz listener.

When I listen to Jazz I tend to listen to music in 3 possible ways.

1. Band leader (e.g. Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, etc.)
2. Style (e.g. Bop, Hard-Bop, Fusion, Big Band, Vocal, etc.)
3. Performer (e.g. Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane)

Most of these items I have actually manged decently with the current
model, but it is by no means perfect.

I typically use the Band Leader as my Album Artist. The Track Artist
field tends to be filled in with the full band and even the Band Name
(e.g. The Miles Davis Quintet) since some band leaders, like Miles
Davis, were known for the various bands they had over their careers.

The Style tag I use as a custom tag that is multivalued. That field is
fairly straight forward and lets me focus into a specific type of jazz,
which is nice with my collection ranging from Big Band to Modern Jazz
to Vocals.

I do see and advantage to distinguishing Live from Studio, but I don't
really do it myself. I tend to just know what albums fit into each
category. As an aside, in my pop music, I tend to use Live as an
additional Genre so that I can quickly find live music. If I cared
enough I'd probably do the same with my Style Tag in Jazz Music.

As far as band members go, I find it quite valuable in limited cases,
although more so lately. It is interesting because musicians like
Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane worked with many band leaders over
their careers and it is interesting to hear their influence and find
their contributions outside their own bands. It also become useful
when looking back at the Miles Davis example to see what band members
were a part of various tracks, albums, quartets, quintets etc.

Instrumentation is probably less important, but I could see it having a
place. Examples I could think of would be when you have saxophonists
playing Alto vs Tenor etc or perhaps a keyboardist is playing a Piano
in one piece but an organ in another.

I have never gone that far with my music collection, but if I did, I'd
probably create a multi-valued tag that would parallel my band member's
tag so that there is a one to one relationship between band member and
instrument in order.

Ultimately, I find that Jazz music and my tagging methods aren't that
different from mainstream pop or rock music and the standard tags used.
It isn't nearly as complicated as Classical Music can get, although I
supposed that just depends on how one looks at it. It could easily get
a bit more challenging if one starts to look at composers, specific
songs (standards for instance), etc. It is interesting at times to see
how a standard might vary from artist to artist or even evolve by the
same musician.

One of the beauties of jazz is the improvisation and the fact that in
live settings, the same piece never sounds the same way twice.
