I think knowing sidemen is valuable, since I am often interested in knowing all the performers in a jazz track (e.g., play all of the tracks where Mel Lewis is the drummer), it would be nice to have a good place to put all of them along with the instrument they are playing. Note that these may be different than the main artists (e.g., Thad Jones and Mel Lewis orchestra or the "Miles & Coltrane" CD). I embedded the performers in a new performer field, and the instrument information in the comment and then used CustomBrowse to create some nice menus, which have made playing Jazz a pleasure for me.
There are a lot of other ways to accomplish this, maybe even with existing tags (e.g., put main artists in BAND and performers in ARTIST), but IMO the functionality needs to be included.
