Indeed! If one aims to the left of the left icon it does work better. It probably would work even better if there were an actual button the size of the target surrounding the icon (like the button on the Web UI -- though obviously that one is not "tappable"). I think it would help aiming one's finger, which for right handed persons hides the icon as one tries to hit some undefined area to the left of it.
