Indeed. Not wanting to start any religious wars on programming languages
and environments here, but I have seen similar things happen with other
projects - a tool/language/environment is chosen (in the cases I have
seen, it's been either perl or php) that is good for an initial version,
and then features are added, the architecture grows - but the
language/tools don't really scale and aren't really up to supporting
such a complex piece of software, and the patches start growing patches
of their own...

I think the important thing would do would be to gather as much
information as we can in the wiki about the protocol, so that LMS can be
rewritten in a compiled language.
