the file extension is for the container format, not the codec format
inside.  AAC and apple lossless are totally different codecs.

no.

in addition to asking here, I'd say to also hedge your bets and
petition apple for FLAC support in itunes as many others have done.
maybe if the volume gets loud enough they'll do it.
