Think about it this way: those NAS boxes have 200-400 MHz processors
but they're often not x86 processors so they perform a little lower
than the speed rating would suggest.  As an off-the-cuff suggestion,
I'd say go for a 500 MHz processor.  750 MHz would be ideal.

256 MB of RAM is fine, even for Windows - provided you don't go
overboard with other applications.

Check out 'ClarkConnect' (http://www.clarkconnect.com/community/). 
Doesn't require much Linux knowledge, and best of all, comes with
SlimServer already installed.

ClarkConnect has a web interface much like a NAS or a router.  If
you're using Windows or Linux on your server, check out 'TightVNC'
(http://www.tightvnc.com/).  According to a recent forum post,
'NoMachine' (http://www.nomachine.com/) is even better, but it works
only for a Linux server (although the client can run on anything).
