I would say the end system will be:
1GHz processor (just in case)
256 RAM
250GB harddrive
No CD ROM (to save energey and quiet factor also i will rip CDs with my
laptop)
minimum voltage PSU
motherboard with onboard vcard.
You can use less CPU, but you should try for more RAM.
Especially if you want a GUI to administer it.
The amount of work you have to do on a Slimserver is so low
that I wouldn't even think of using Windows. A legal copy
costs $100, and you won't use any significant portion of it.
Also those guys who have dedicated slim box out there, how do you
control the box without monitor, keyboard, and mouse installed ?
I have a KVM for my servers for the rare times I need to see it,
which I have not in more than 13 months. You can skip it if you
can just plug in an old CRT and keyboard for the rare times.
I use an ancient laptop with DSL on it for control, and use X-Windows.
See current threads for alternaives, from VNC on.
And I use the same laptop as my remote control thru the browser.
