Front row isn't only for Mac Intel as I understand it so I don't
think this is a matter of software being incompatible with the
powerpc. If you look at the info on the Intel Mac mini you will find
that it's audio is somewhat different from that of the non-Intel Mac
mini and I would imagine that's why front Row doesn't work on the
older Mac minis. If I understand correctly, front row does work on
non-Intel iMacs.
As for audio, I find that between windows media player and vlc and
realplayer and iTunes I can access everything I need to access.
Granted wmp isn't going to be upgraded any more and I'm not sure if
flip is going to cover for that or not but at least at present I have
no problem. People also use audacity and quicktime; maybe there are
others I am leaving out.
