Hi Gordon,

Which Apple branded software is incompatible with PowerPC machines? It's relatively straightforward to build a Universal Binary with Apple's own developer tools. If we're talking about software which is (or needs to be, or benefits by) taking special advantage of features of the Intel processors then perhaps it's reasonable to accept that certain of the software (particularly "professional/industry" titles) will require an Intel machine.

If you're speaking of Front Row...Front Row (and the Apple Remote) is included on all new Macs and is not available separately (actually, the remote is, in fact, available separately). In the case of Front Row, this seems to have less to do with supporting both chip types and more about adding interesting features so new machines are especially appealing. This is part of the business. This seems reasonable. Finally, it seems Front Row is, in fact, a Universal Binary. I'm not suggesting you act on the following, but here is some relevant information from MacRumors:

Very shortly after Front Row's debut, several websites started speculated over the possibility of running Front Row on other Macs. Hacked versions of Front Row soon appeared on the internet, with instructions on how to install and use on other Mac OS X systems. These are unsupported by Apple but illustrate a potential future for the software once the buzz of the new iMac G5 quietens down.

What features are you looking for in an accessible audio player?

Hi. So it would appear that Apple has already begun producing software which is incompatible with PowerPC machines. I guess I win my bet ... I predicted to a friend earlier this year that this would happen. Like me, he bought a PowerPC Mac Mini only a matter of months ago, believing that Apple would continue to support the platform with reciprical releases. Ah well, such is life. I'm still hunting for an entirely accessible audio player for the Mac. Thought I'd found one in Winamp-For-The-The-Mac yesterday, but it only supports, and in fact relies on OS9 being installed. Then I tried Audion 3.02, and was again disappointed. Anybody got any ideas as to where to look next? If so I'd be grateful.
