Has anyone reported this as a bug using the apple bug reporter?
There may be apple folks that monitor the list, but if the problem
isn't brought to their attention via proper channels, then it will
not get fixed. This list is not the propper channel. I've not
upgraded to 10.4.7 on the main drive, though I did on the backup one,
and I did notice this behavior, though it didn't make sense to me,
and I didn't really poke around to see what the problem was.
But, if nobody tells apple there's a problem, it can't be fixed. And
calling apple on the phone may or may not produce a bug report, so if
we really want it resolved, then a bug report is the way to ensure it
at least gets to the attention of the right people.
