Hi Christian,

The Aluminum keyboards have their functions in different locations. I
think that keys F10, F11, and F12 adjust the volume in the way that keys
F3, F4, and F5 work on my Mac laptop -- mute, volume down, and
volume up. Are you using the F11 key to decrease volume?

Also, have you applied the software updates for the Aluminum keyboards?

According to the MacFixIt site, there is a reported problem with preventing
shutdown associated with the new Aluminum keyboard:

The newest software update, Keyboard Software 1.2, may resolve some of
these problems. The September 11 MacFixIt announcement link points to:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29721

There are no release notes with the update, but anecdotally from MacFixIt,
some of the issues related to the Aluminum keyboards, which include
potential issues with USB devices, issues with sleep, function key, and
startup command problems are solved by this software update.

If that doesn't work, you can see whether the earlier problem descriptions
appended below match your symptoms. And you can try the suggested
work-around fix of connecting the keyboard through a USB hub instead
of plugging in directly.

Hope this helps,

Esther

Apple Aluminum keyboards (#6): Preventing shutdown, fix; may conflict with
other USB devices

Preventing shutdown, fix Some users have reported that the Apple Aluminum
keyboard prevents proper shutdown when connected directly to the host Mac.

One reader writes:

"After applying the F3/F4 fix (replacing and updating Dock.app), I encountered
a new problem. When I tried to shut down the G4 Quicksilver (with 10.4.10) it
turns back on by itself immediately. At first I though I did a restart, but I
did not.
The keyboard is connected to USB port 1 of the G4."

It appears that the fix for this issue is, in some cases, to connect the
keyboard
through an external USB hub as discussed in our USB troubleshooting tutorial.

MacFixIt reader Joachim Schaller writes:

"When I connect the keyboard to my USB2 Hub (Belkin 7-port), which is connected
to a Ratoc USB2/FW combo card, everything works as expected. I can even use
start-up keys (single user, verbose etc.)."

May conflict with other USB devices, fixes We've received reports indicating
problems with other USB devices connected on the same bus as the Apple
aluminum keyboard.

MacFixIt reader Pam Sargood writes:

"Since connecting my new Apple metal keyboard, my Logitech MX Revolution
mouse has ceased to function. Reinstalling the driver software has no effect,
the
cursor remains motionless and the lcc control panel is unable to see the
device."
