Hi Darcy and Tim,

I tried out the additemstodock program that Tim linked to put a
folder into the dock (in Tiger). Something shows up there with
the name of the folder or item, but I can't open it or show it in
finder.

Tim, in order to open a web address the file has to be a .webloc
file. I've found an application, WeblocMaker, that will create these
files for your Desktop, but this was written for the PowerPC Macs.
Here's the macupdate download page:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16018/weblocmaker

The WeblocMaker.app lets you input a URL and a name for
the webloc file. You can create a URL shortcut for either a
Mac Web location or a Windows Web location or both on your
Desktop. (They're named <name>.webloc and <name>,url)

If you open the .webloc file in TextEdit it is a simple .xml file
with some formatting information and the URL in a string.
You can edit this to change the URL and save the file under
a new name, and opening or double-clicking these .webloc
files will take you to the web page.

I would have tried putting one of these into the dock with
additemstodock, but that program doesn't seem to let me
open the files it moves to the dock (in Tiger).

One warning about the WeblocMaker download file: it comes
as WeblocMaker.tar.bz2.tar. I had to double-click the
downloaded file to have it create a WeblocMaker.tar.bz2
file, and then I had to double-click the WeblocMaker.tar.bz2
file to have it unpack into a WeblocMaker folder with the
app inside. A bit weird, since the naming with the extra
.tar extension meant that Stuffit Expander didn't handle this
automatically for me. YMMV.

Cheers,

Esther
