I think the flaw in your logic is that there've been word processors,
referred to as word processors, which could not do the things you
claim are prerequisites of word processing applications. There is no
finite definition that I'm aware of. TextEdit falls into a gray area
where it isn't really either by the strictest definitions. Things are
rarely black-and-white. And, of course, you're also, I think,
defining word processors to some extent with the definition that
better fits page-layout software, which is an entire different category.
