Yeah, I do know however that apparently on my iMac, it seems that if
I've lowered the volume and then shut the machine down, when it
reboots, the chime seems quieter. It seems to stay this way. My chime
is a good deal quieter than my wife's iMac. That was why I asked the
question, it seems I was able to without realizing it, affect the
volume of the chime.

Scott, actually that would be a cool feature! I think he's
referring here though, to the setting of the volume or drive /
partition that you would boot from. However, as I said, I'd love to
be able to set the chime volume independently of the system volume.
Have an awesome day!…

Hey Marshall, thanks, I didn't realize I could use the option key
to set the volume at boot. I assume you mean the chime? How does
that work? I assume holding the option and appropriate volume key?
In any case, that isn't a problem and the reversing of the option
and other key isn't a problem for me. I did try plugging my Apple
keyboard directly into my laptop and it wouldn't work so I'm
assuming it will if plugged into the KVM.
Well hey, it sure will make life easier as I have one keyboard on
the tray and the laptop keyboard on the desk which wastes space and
is causing me problems in my wrist.

Scott,
I've used Belkin KVM switches and everything seems to work with
two exceptions. The first is the reversed key problem you
mentioned. The second is that you cannot use the Option key to
select the boot volume. I'm not sure if this also applies to the
"C" key to boot from the CD.

Folks, I'm wanting to purchase a KVM switch. What I'm looking for
is one that will allow me to use my Mac keyboard with my iMac and
my employer's windows laptop. I know many will accommodate both
Macs and PCs, but I was not sure about the functionality with the
keyboard. I don't care if the windows key and alt key are
reversed for example, but I want all the other keys to function
normally.
So, if anyone has any advice on which KVM will do the job or
knows whether the keyboard is mapped correctly, I'd appreciate it.
tnx
