Sorry Ester, I don't have anything that uses the remote connected to a KVM.

Hi Cara,

Yes, I know that the Apple Remote can be used to select
an optional boot device, but I wanted someone who has a
KVM switch setup (e.g. Marshall), to make sure that the
sequence of key presses from the remote gets interpreted
correctly. But your summary that confirmed that you could
use the right/left directional ring to choose the OS was
very helpful in confirming my speculation (in a followup
archive post, in response to David's question) that this was the
way to choose the OS with the remote.

Going back in time again <smile> there was another post
that detailed expanded uses for the Apple Remote, including
running apps on your Windows installation, and controlling
VLC through the use of third party software. You can read
this post from the December mailing list archives for this list at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg24480.html

or you can go to the wikipedia entry for the Apple remote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Remote

The list post summarized the details that I thought were of
special interest to this list at the time.

Cheers,

Esther

I also just posted a link on this a couple of weeks back.

The site shows a whole host of options that the remote works with, and
yes, choosing an OS at startup is one of them. The menu key on the
remote would act like the option key press. So holding that would
bring up the appropriate selection area and then using the right /
left directional ring, followed by a short press of select, would
choose the OS.

HTH and have a great day!…

Hi Marshall and Scott,

Can you use the Apple Remote (with an Intel Mac) to select the boot
volume if using the Option key does not work with the Belkin KVM
switch? This came up on the list last year; here's the post in the
searchable Mail Archives:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg24440.html

From Safari you can use Control-N to step through to the next post in
the thread (and Control-P will step back to the previous post in the
thread), so you can read through the subsequent messages. If you
use Control-P twice, you'll see my speculated answer to David's
question about whether you can also choose a boot volume with the
Apple Remote. Other browsers that support shortcut keys to navigate
the Mail archive posts may use the Alt key in place of the Control key
(Alt-N to go to the next post in a thread and Alt-P to go to a
previous
post).

Cheers,

Esther

Scott,
I've used Belkin KVM switches and everything seems to work with two
exceptions. The first is the reversed key problem you mentioned.
The
second is that you cannot use the Option key to select the boot
volume. I'm not sure if this also applies to the "C" key to boot
from
the CD.

Folks, I'm wanting to purchase a KVM switch. What I'm looking for is
one that will allow me to use my Mac keyboard with my iMac and my
employer's windows laptop. I know many will accommodate both Macs
and PCs, but I was not sure about the functionality with the
keyboard. I don't care if the windows key and alt key are reversed
for example, but I want all the other keys to function normally.
So, if anyone has any advice on which KVM will do the job or knows
whether the keyboard is mapped correctly, I'd appreciate it.

tnx
