I have a hybrid network with OOo on several workstations and Microsoft
on several. I am migrating to OOo from MS gradually. All of the stored

opened in OOo the document opens! What's worse the user is able to
modify the original!
I am using the newest version of OOo. The MS versions are 2k3 Pro and
XP Pro for the most part. Any ideas how to fix the compatibility (and
security) issue?
Any info greatly appreciated.
So far this is a really strange thread and what must be close to a dozen
silly or useless and even a couple of completely off-topic posts tossed
in. It reads more like a case of MS bashing, cya and half-truths with a
healthy dose of guesses and outright misinformation thrown in for good
measure.
Any newbie reading this is going to look pretty strangely at the OP
and those responses.
It' an uncalled for affront to OO.o and all of the hardworking folks
who have poured a lot of blood and sweat into these codes to provide a
completely acceptable and useful suite of software, not to mention that
it's based on a whole new paradigm of design from day one.
I don't think more than one or two of the responders actually checked
any password protection functions or even had any experience with them
at all. Nearly everything said so far is completely uncalled for and
smacks of the beginnings of a troll fest, to be honest. In general the
amount of misinformation presented here is not only unacceptable, but
borders on inane, intentional infliction of damages on both MS and OO.o.
For one thing, there is not A password protection opportunity in MS
Word; there are MANY password protectionS available to the user in Word,
ranging from simple to the very strong, and OO.o will NOT open them
without the password to open and/or to edit them as the case may have
been set. e.g. you could set a password such that the document could be
OPENED, but not EDITED. Or not opened period. Going a step further it
could even be limited by account names.
The complete lack of any useful information posted here is disgusting
irregardless of its intent/purpose.
JMO,
Interesting take on the subject. I found most (not all) of the posts
rather helpful. Interestingly enough yours was one of the very few that
wasn't helpful at all. There was no malicious intent in my post and I'm
surprised at your response to it.
You are correct about document open passwords in MS; OOo prompts for the
password in order to open the document. The document I tested had
somehow gotten corrupted and I couldn't get it to work properly in MS
either. No sweat there; that's what backups are for. However, the
document modify (read only) password protection in MS is not respected
in OOo. As a matter of fact once a modify-protected MS document is
opened in OOo it's modify protection is removed if opened in MS as well!
I have taken an easier approach in document protection and applied a
permissions filter on the containing directory. I was hoping for a
different route, but that will do.
As to your comments, I have nothing but the deepest respect for the
"hardworking folks who have poured a lot of blood and sweat into these
codes." If not, I wouldn't have made the migration to OOo in the first
place. I posted a question on this newsgroup and received several
helpful answers which is the point, isn't it???
To my helpful responders, thanks for your consideration. To the
"hardworking folks" who make OOo the great product that it is, I tip my
hat. To The Troll, enjoy your fest.
Mike W.
