Then write your own function to fire on that event, and call the validator
conditionally, as in the example.

Well, yeah. If the user simply never enters the zip code field, for
instance, the focustOut event will never fire, and thus the validator will
never fire either.

You're referring to the ActionScript 3 language reference. And actually, if
you read the entries on these validators, the information is very specific.

But I wasn't referring to the language reference. I was talking about the
validator discussion within the main Flex 3 development docs. Try doing a
little reading there, and you'll find the answers to many of the questions
you've been asking.
