The problem is that quality is *far* more important than quantity: if you start adding committers willy-nilly you end up a total mess (c.f. PHP). I'd rather let Django development stop completely than let someone start moving us backwards. If you have anyone in particular to nominate, the process is outlined there as well. Please also search the archives; this comes up pretty regularly.
